Jharkhand Sthapna Diwas

On November 15, 2000, Jharkhand became the country's 28th state. JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) demanded statehood after India gained independence in 1947.

Jharkhand is derived from two words: "JHAR" and "KHAND". "JHAR" signifies forest, while "KHAND" indicates land. Thus, Jharkhand means "Land of Forests". The day corresponds with Birsa Munda's birth anniversary. Birsa Munda was born in the 19th century to a Munda tribal family. He headed the Munda rebellion. He sowed the seeds of rebellion against the landlords and Britishers. His struggle resulted in the passage of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act.
