Baba Baidyanath Dham

Baidyanath Temple, also called Baba Baidyanath Dham, is a Hindu temple devoted to Shiva. It is located in Deoghar, Santhal Parganas Division, Jharkhand, India. The Baba Baidyanath shrine is the centerpiece of the temple complex, which also includes 21 other temples. It is significant to the Hindu sects of Shaivism since this temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

The Maa Parvati temple is connected to the main temple by large red sacred threads, which are unique and deserving of attention, symbolizing Shiva and Shakti's union. According to the accounts in the Shiva Purana, the sacred Baidyanath temple represents soul oneness and hence is appropriate for Hindu marriage.

Mythology:

According to myth, Ravana was undergoing penance in the Himalayas to appease Shiva. He offered Shiva nine of his heads. As he was about to sacrifice his tenth head, Shiva appeared before him and expressed his happiness with the offering. Shiva then asked what boon he wished. Ravana requested that the "Kamna Linga" be transported to the island of Lanka, as well as Shiva from Kailash to Lanka.

Shiva granted Ravana's request, but with a condition. He stated that if the lingam was set en route, it would become the deity's permanent home and could never be transferred.

The celestial gods got concerned when they learned that Shiva had left his residence on Mount Kailash. They requested a resolution from Vishnu. Vishnu requested that Varuna, the water deity, enter Ravana's stomach by achamana, a rite in which water is sipped from one's palm. Ravana left for Lanka with the lingam after performing achaman, and he felt the need to urinate at Deoghar.

According to the myth, Vishnu took the shape of a cowherd named Baiju. While Ravana went to urinate, he gave this cowherd a lingam. Due of Varun Dev's presence, Ravana took a long time to release himself. Baiju became enraged after being forced to wait for Ravana for an extended period of time. He then placed the lingam on the ground and departed the area. Ravana returned and attempted to pick up the lingam, but was unable. Ravana became enraged when he realized this was Lord Vishnu's action and proceeded to press his thumb against the lingam before leaving, partially damaging the Shiv Lingam. The Shiva lingam was then worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, and other deities, who built the Baidyanath Temple. Since then, Mahadev has settled in Deoghar as the personification of the Kamna Linga.
