Dassam Falls, Ranchi

The Dassam Falls is a waterfall located near Taimara village in Bundu, Ranchi, Jharkhand. The Dassam Falls is also known as Dassam Ghagh.

The Dassam Falls are a natural cascade on the Kanchi River, a tributary of the Subarnarekha River. The water falls from a height of 44 metres (144 feet). The sound of water echoes across the area. Dassam Falls, located near the edge of the Ranchi plateau, is one of the region's many scarp falls.

Dassam Falls is an example of a nick formed by rejuvenation. Knick points, also known as nick points or just nicks, are breaks in slopes in a river's longitudinal profile created by rejuvenation. The break in channel gradient allows water to descend vertically, resulting in a cascade.

Dassam is a modified variant of the term Da:song, which in Mundari indicates the act of pouring water. Da signifies water, and song means to pour or measure. The waterfall resembles someone pouring water, hence the name was originally Da:song, but was later altered to Dassam.

The water at Dassam Falls is exceedingly clean and clear. It is normal for tourists to be tempted to enter the water for a bath or swim, but they are advised not to do so due to the current generated. There have been numerous incidences of drowning at Dassam Falls. From 2001 to 2006, nine persons perished from drowning.
