Dimna Lake, Jamshedpur

Dimna Lake Jamshedpur

Dimna Lake is an artificial reservoir near Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, 15 kilometers from Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand. Built in 1944 by Tata Steel to address the city's water scarcity.

In the late 1930s, Jamshedpur residents were concerned that water scarcity might affect the city's population, which was rapidly rising. To address the situation, the Dimna Nala Water Supply Scheme was implemented.

Dimna Lake was built and owned by Tata Steel in the Boram block. The building started in February 1940. The project was finished successfully, and the city received water for the first time on April 17, 1944.

Dimna Lake is located at the foot of Dalma Hills. Dimna Lake comprises approximately 5.5 km2, with approximately 1,861 acres acquired under the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 to construct the dam. The lake is Jamshedpur's only source of drinking water. The lake is close to the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.
