Maa Dewri Mandir, Ranchi

Maa Dewri Mandir is one of the most popular and historic temple in Ranchi. Dewri Mandir is situated in Diuri village, Tamar near Ranchi in Jharkhand. In the tribal Bhumij Munda languages, this temple is also known as Mata Dewri Diri.

The 700-year-old murti of the Goddess Durga, Kali, is the primary attraction of this historic temple. Normally, Goddess Durga has ten hands, however the murti have sixteen. It is an old temple that underwent renovations a few years ago. The old mandir was built without the use of binding substance or chalk by interlocking stones.

Devotees at the temple tie magical red and yellow threads on bamboo to grant their wishes. When their desires are granted, they return to the temple and untie the thread. Dedicated to the Solha Bhuji Goddess, a manifestation of Goddess Durga.

Dewri Temple is also thought to be the only temple where six tribal priests known as Pahans execute rites and offer prayers alongside Brahmin priests known as Pandas.

Tribal culture (particularly Bhumij tribes) has had an impact on the Mandir. Tribal peoples perform daily puja rituals here. Six days a week, tribal pahans, or priests, do pujas at this temple; on one day, a Brhamin performs the puja. There is the murti of Maa Deudi Devi among the Garbhagriha.
