Pahari Mandir, Ranchi

The temple of Lord Shankara (Shiva) is located on a hill in the heart of the city Ranchi and is known as Pahari Mandir. This temple is situated 350 feet above ground and 2140 feet above sea level. There are 468 steps to climb in order to access the temple.

From the temple, one can see the entire city of Ranchi. In the hill temple, Lord Shiva is adored in the form of a linga. During the months of Shivaratri and Sawan, a great number of Shiva worshipers flock here.

The story of the Pahari Mandir is very interesting. Before the country's independence, the British had control of this Lord Shiva temple on the mountain, where they used to hang the Freedom Fighters. Since its inception, the national flag has flown alongside religious flags on this temple on Independence Day and Republic Day. This is the first temple in the country to fly the tricolor.

Tiriburu was the traditional name of the Pahari Baba temple, which was later altered to 'Hanging Garry' in British times because Freedom Fighters were hanged here during British administration.
