Tata Steel Zoological Park, Jamshedpur
Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP), located in the midst of the beautiful, green metropolis of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, was founded in 1990.
Tata Steel Zoological Society, an NGO funded entirely by the Tata Steel Foundation, operates the zoo. The 30-hectare Zoo campus is located on the banks of the Subarnarekha River, a wetland known for attracting a significant number of winter migrating bird species, which adds to the intrinsic value of fauna.
The Zoo is being re-imagined in accordance with an approved master layout plan, with animal exhibits thoughtfully positioned according to taxonomic classification to provide visitors with the most immersive and naturalistic experience possible, while a lush green backdrop pays homage to the primary goal of preserving wild animals.
The Central Zoo Authority has classified TSZP as a 'Medium' category Zoo. The CZA reviews zoos on a regular basis and sets standards for their improvement. TSZP has been evaluated by CZA at regular intervals, and major recommendations to meet the prescribed standards include the establishment of a veterinary hospital with a postmortem room and an incinerator, the relocation of animal enclosures, separate entry and exit gates for visitors, the strengthening of the perimeter wall, and so on. CZA approved the Zoological Park's revised layout proposal in July 2020.
The zoo has over 432 unique creatures representing 49 species, including 19 mammals, 26 birds, and 4 reptiles. The Zoological Park plans to host further creatures in the future, including giraffes, mouse deer, Indian giant squirrels, Sarus cranes, Demoiselle cranes, Rosy Pelicans, Adjutant storks, Military Macaws, Yellow Monitors, and Indian Rock Python snakes.
